ABSTRACT

This study evaluates the hybrid semesters (winter term 20/21 and summer term 21) conducted at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover during the Covid-19 pandemic from the students' perspective. The results will be used to adapt future veterinary teaching to the needs and wishes of the students, especially with regard to the teaching formats used in the future. For this purpose, a survey was conducted among the students enrolled at the TiHo in the summer semester 2021. 492 fully completed questionnaires were included in the analysis. The main topics of the survey were technical requirements for studying, influences of the hybrid semesters on learning, impact of the hybrid semesters on the students' studies, and general study conditions. The results of the study show a positive evaluation of the hybrid semesters. Students highlighted increased flexibility and lecture recording as main benefits of digital teaching. With the available hardware, the majority of students was able to take part in all courses of their studies. However, they indicated that digital teaching made social interaction more difficult. In order to maintain the advantages of digital teaching and com-pensate disadvantages, veterinary medicine studies should in future be conducted with suitable lectures as digital events or in a blended learning format and practical exercises as face-to-face events.Copyright © 2023 Schlutersche Fachmedien GmbH, ein Unternehmen der Schluterschen Mediengruppe ISSN 1439-0299 https://svg.to/bmtw-open-access.

The EMA pandemic Task Force (COVID-ETF) helps EU member states and the European Commission (EC) to take quick and coordinated regulatory action on COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. Delayed submissions As a result of pressure on the work time of regulators from COVID-19 matters, pharmaceutical companies are thought to be holding back the application for marketing authorizations of their products or approval of variations of marketing authorizations. Regulators are not only worried about having to grapple with a rush of delayed submissions but also the extra burden of implementing new EU legislation in areas like veterinary medicine, medical devices, and personal data protection. A joint HMA/EMA Big Data Task Force recommended in December 2019 that the regulatory network set up a platform for access and analysis of healthcare data from across the EU (5).

ABSTRACT

With the acceleration of globalization, the sustained increase of mobility, the intensification of global warming and environmental changes, the transmission of diseases has become more diverse. In recent years, the corona virus disease 2019(COVID-19) has caused huge economic losses and social unrest around the world. A single-discipline has been unable to solve such complex public health problems effectively. The proposal and development of the One Health approach is closely related to the issues on veterinary medicine and zoonoses. One Health focuses on intradisciplinary, multi-sectoral, and cross-fields collaboration at three levels, including local, regional and global levels, to explore the humans-animals-environment interface complexity. In this review, the development process of One Health approach was introduced. The relationship between the One Health and zoonoses, the role of the One Health in the prevention and control of zoonoses, and how to effectively implement the One Health approach in the real world were explored, providing references for research on zoonoses prevention and control, anti-microbial resistance, food safety, and the impact of climate change on health.Copyright © 2022, National Institute of Parasitic Diseases. ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: The covid-19 pandemic has reversed years of progress in the fight to end tuberculosis. So, the discovery of new drugs as antituberculosis is very much needed. Our previous studies have shown that the extract of Centella asiatica is able to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro and requires further research. The aims of this study is to prove the effect of Centella asiatica inhibit Mycobacterium tuberculosis in rat model tuberculosis. Method(s): The protocol in this study was approved by the veterinary ethics committee of Airlangga University. The rat tuberculosis model was induced by intrathecal injection of a suspension of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain H37 Rv. Twenty-eight tuberculosis rat were randomly divided into four groups. Groups 1,2, and 3 were treated with ethanol extract of Centella asiatica at 375 mg/kgBW, 750 mg/kgBW and 1500 mg/kgBW, and the fourth group was the control group. Centella asiatica extract is administered orally via an intragastric feeding tube for two weeks, once daily At the end of the experimental period, rats were sacrificed by cervical decapitation. The left lung tissue was taken aseptically and cultured on Middlebrook 7H10. Result(s): The results showed that there was no bacterial growth on the culture media in the group that received Centella asiatica extract at a dose of 750 and 1500 mg/kg BW. Conclusion(s): The conclusion in this study, that Centella asiatica extract inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis at doses of 750 and 1500 mg/kg BW. ABSTRACT

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV- 2) targets mainly the respiratory tract. In addition to respiratory symptoms, many extrapulmonary manifestations were observed in the gastrointestinal tract and reported by SARS-CoV-2 patients, including abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. SARS-CoV-2 binds initially to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) on the host cell surface via its spike (S) protein before it undergoes endocytosis and fusion with the lysosomal membrane. The spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 is a heavily N- and O-glycosylated trimer. Glycosylation is an essential posttranslational modification in the life cycle of membrane and secretory proteins that affects their structural and functional characteristics as well as their trafficking and sorting patterns. This study aimed at elucidating the impact of glycosylation modulation on the trafficking of both S1 subunit and ACE2 as well as their interaction at the cell surface of intestinal epithelial cells. For this purpose, the S1 protein was expressed in COS-1 cells and its glycosylation modified using N-butyldeoxynojirimycin (NB-DNJ), an inhibitor of ER-located alpha-glucosidases I and II, and or 1-deoxymannojirimycin (dMM), an inhibitor of the Golgi-located alpha-mannosidase I. The intracellular and secreted S1 proteins were analyzed by endoglycosidase H treatment. Similarly, ACE2 trafficking to the brush border membrane of intestinal Caco-2 cells was also assessed in the presence or absence of the inhibitors. Finally, the interaction between the S1 protein and ACE2 was investigated at the surface of Caco-2 cells by co-immunoprecipitation. Our data show that NB-DNJ significantly reduced the secretion of S1 proteins in COS-1 cells, while dMM affected S1 secretion to a lesser extent. Moreover, NB-DNJ and dMM differentially affected ACE2 trafficking and sorting to the brush border membrane of intestinal Caco-2 cells. Strikingly, the interaction between S1 and ACE2 was significantly reduced when both proteins were processed by the glycosylation inhibitors, rendering glycosylation and its inhibitors potential candidates for SARS-CoV-2 treatment. ABSTRACT

Bacteriophages have a wide range of applications such as combating antibiotic resistance, preventing food contamination for food safety, and as biomarkers to indirectly assess the quality of water. Additionally, bacteriophage components (endolysins and coat proteins) have a lot of applications in food processing, vaccine design, and the delivery of cargo to the body. Therefore, bacteriophages/components have a multitude of applications in human, plant/veterinary, and environmental health (One Health). Despite their versatility, bacteriophage/component use is mostly limited to temperatures within 4-40 °C. This limits their applications (e.g., in food processing conditions, pasteurization, and vaccine design). Advances in thermophilic bacteriophage research have uncovered novel thermophilic endolysins (e.g., ΦGVE2 amidase and MMPphg) that can be used in food processing and in veterinary medicine. The endolysins are thermostable at temperatures > 65 °C and have broad antimicrobial activities. In addition to thermophilic endolysins, enzymes (DNA polymerase and ligases) derived from thermophages have different applications in molecular biology/biotechnology: to generate DNA libraries and develop diagnostics for human and animal pathogens. Furthermore, coat proteins from thermophages are being explored to develop virus-like particle platforms with versatile applications in human and animal health. Overall, bacteriophages, especially those that are thermophilic, have a plethora of applications in One Health.

ABSTRACT

In Turkey, when the first case of COVID-19 was announced, the following day education was suspended and later it was transformed into the online model. In such a brief period, students were expected to adapt to the online education system in terms of both technologically and mentally. An online survey was applied to students of a veterinary medicine faculty (n = 288) to identify students' online education experiences, the effect of living condi-tions and year of study on students' online education experiences and bur-nout scores, as well as the relationship between students' online education experiences and burnout components and the determinants of students' self-evaluation of their academic progress. Burnout scores of the students were assessed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Scale, which was adapted to Turkish language. Students living in remote areas, living in crowded environments, and students who lost motivation as a result of missing practical courses were found to have negative experiences. When students had negative experiences, emotional exhaustion and depersona-lization scores increased and personal accomplishment scores decreased. Students with high weighted grade point average, high emotional exha-ustion, high personal accomplishment, and low depersonalization scores rated their academic progress high. Reconstructing the online education model is vital for veterinary medicine faculties for an effective learning, considering vulnerable students' needs as well as providing students with adequate practical courses. This reconstruction would help to reduce the burnout scores of students.

The COVID 19 pandemic has caused an increase in the number of owned cats and dogs and the resulting increased demand for veterinarians and veterinary services. This has also caused increased work stress and performance issues by veterinarians. This paper describes how veterinarians can minimize work stress by modifying their schedule of medical activities in order to still maintain an ideal work life balance.

ABSTRACT

Background: The evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic affected eating behavior due to the anxiety it generates in individuals, especially among the younger population;As a result, preferences in unhealthy foods are observed. The objective was to explore the association between eating behavior and levels of anxiety, stress and depression in the population of university students from two private universities in the city of Lima, Peru during the year 2021. Method(s): Cross-sectional study on a sample of 371 participants from two private universities in Peru between October and November 2021. The Healthy Eating Index Questionnaire (IAS) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21) were used. Result(s): 53.6% of the participants are women, the majority of university students belong to health sciences careers (21.3%). Women more predisposed to have more severe stress, depression and anxiety, compared to men. The IAS questionnaire score was significantly higher in those studying veterinary and health sciences. The categories of eating behavior: needs changes and unhealthy are risk factors for the presence of anxiety. There is a negative relationship between IAS and DASS-21. Conclusion(s): Eating behavior is associated with the presence of stress, depression and anxiety in students from two private universities in Metropolitan Lima in 2021.Copyright © 2022 Sociedad Espanola de Nutricion Comunitaria. The coronavirus disease-19 pandemic with the characteristics of asymptomatic condition, long incubation period and poor treatment has influenced the entire globe. Coronaviruses are important emergent pathogens, specifically, the recently emerged sever acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the causative virus of the current COVID-19 pandemic. To mitigate the virus and curtail the infection risk, vaccines are the most hopeful solution. The protein structure and genome sequence of SARS-CoV-2 were processed and provided in record time;providing feasibility to the development of COVID-19 vaccines. In an unprecedented scientific and technological effort, vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 have been developed in less than one year. Objective: To show new trends in the field of vaccinology and spread awareness among population regarding vaccination of animals and successfully controlling spread of diseases Study Design: This is a review study for the development of animal vaccines and was conducted from September, 2021 to June, 2022 at IMBB Department, The University of Lahore, Lahore, Pakistan. Review of Literature was collected on traditional and recent approaches for the development of veterinary vaccines and gathered for the awareness among the field of veterinary vaccinology. Methodology: Animals provide food and clothing in addition to other value-added products. Changes in diet and lifestyle have increased the consumption and the use of animal products. Infectious diseases in animals are a major threat to global animal health and its welfare;their effective control is crucial for agronomic health, for safeguarding food security and also alleviating rural poverty. Development of vaccines has led to increased production of healthy poultry, livestock, and fish. Animal production increases have alleviated food insecurity. Before year 2000, most veterinary vaccines were from inactivated organisms that were formulated with an oil-based adjuvant or live attenuated vaccines. Result(s): The discovery of antigen/gene delivery systems has facilitated the development of novel prophylactic and therapeutic veterinary vaccines. Uses several bioinformatics algorithms to predict antigen localization and it has been successfully applied to immunize against many veterinary diseases. Vectors and pathogens that may lead to emergent diseases in animals. Preventing transmission of emerging infectious diseases at the animal-human interface is critically important for protecting the world population from epizootics and pandemics. Hence, there is a need to develop new vaccines to prevent diseases in animals. An area of veterinary vaccination that needs more research and discussion is vaccine interference. The phrase itself is ambiguous and might mean either a condition in which immunization against one disease may weaken the protective immunity established by immunization against another, or a circumstance in which the presence of maternally derived antibodies prevent immunization in newborn animals. Practical implication: This study will provide awareness among community about veterinary vaccines and will develop a disease-free state for pets.Vetrinary vaccines not only prevent diseases in animals but also stops their spread among humans. Conclusion(s): This review examines some of the main topics that have emerged in the veterinary vaccine field with the use of modern biotechnology techniques. In addition, development of effective vaccines has led to healthier companion animals. However, challenges remain including climate change that has led to enhancement in vectors and pathogens that may lead to emergent diseases in animals. Preventing transmission of emerging infectious diseases at the animal-human interface is critically important for protecting the world population from epizootics and pandemics. ABSTRACT

The prevalence of porcine enteric coronaviruses (PECs), including transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), porcine delta coronavirus (PDCoV), and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), poses a serious threat to animal and public health. Here, we aimed to further optimize the porcine aminopeptidase N (pAPN) gene editing strategy to explore the balance between individual antiviral properties and the biological functions of pAPN in pigs. Finally, APN-chimeric gene-edited pigs were produced through a CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knock-in strategy. Further reproductive tests indicated that these gene-edited pigs exhibited normal pregnancy rates and viability. Notably, in vitro viral challenge assays further demonstrated that porcine kidney epithelial cells isolated from F1-generation gene-edited pigs could effectively inhibit TGEV infection. This study is the first to report the generation of APN-chimeric pigs, which may provide a natural host animal for characterizing PEC infection with APN and help in the development of better antiviral solutions. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

ABSTRACT

Abruptly weaned crossbred steer calves (N = 271) were used in a randomized, blinded 2-arm clinical trial to assess the impact of a long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug on bovine herpesvirus type 1, bovine respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza virus type 3, and coronavirus titers and health outcomes when administered concurrently with a modified live respiratory vaccine upon arrival at a feedlot. Treatment groups included a control (saline, n = 135) and an experimental group (injectable meloxicam, n = 136). Viral antibody titers and body weight were measured on arrival, day 7, and day 21, along with a final weight on day 45. Body weight and antibody titers for all viruses increased over time (P < 0.001), however, there were no differences by treatment group or a significant group × time interaction when evaluated using repeated measures analysis of variance. Interestingly, the use of meloxicam was associated with increased treatment risk (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the administration of meloxicam may adversely affect health, however, a decreased vaccine response is likely not a contributing factor.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, a large body of evidence demonstrates that active learning through engaging college students in a discussion leads to increased learning outcomes. However, more empirical studies are needed to understand its effectiveness in online classes. In Experiment 1, students majoring in veterinary medicine were randomly assigned to three conditions: Lecture and Review, Lecture and Discussion, and Self-study and Discussion. Post-test results showed that the two discussion groups achieved significantly higher scores than the review group. Moreover, among the two discussion groups, the self-study group performed better than the lecture group. To reconsider the reliability and generalizability of our study we conducted Experiment 2 in which, we compared the performance of the two discussion conditions again for students majoring in social science. Our findings indicate that not only online discussions but active learning activities such as self-studying before the discussion is also crucial for students' learning. © ISLS.

Objective: To assess veterinary needs of clients with low socioeconomic status during the COVID-19 pandemic, to explore the impact of the pandemic on marginalized communities, and to understand perceptions regarding barriers and incentives of telehealth appointments as a method to increase care access. Sample: 205 active Community Veterinary Medicine Clinic clients at Tufts at Tech Community Veterinary Clinic in Worcester, MA. Procedures: This cross-sectional study used a survey-based method to assess veterinary needs of clients with low socioeconomic status during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey measured client perceptions regarding potential barriers and incentives of telehealth appointments. Participants were randomly sampled from a list of active clients and completed the survey either by email or over the phone. The survey was available in both English and Spanish. Clients who completed the questionnaire received credit for a free examination. Results: A total of 205 clients submitted survey responses. Factors affecting access to veterinary care were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Access to reliable internet in the home was reported by 87% (n = 177) of participants. Digital access was correlated with education when controlling for race, income, age, and gender. Education was predictive of comfort with using video-chat (χ2 = 65, df = 24, p ≤ 0.01) and of whether or not clients reported need for assistance for using video-chat (χ2 = 52, df = 18, p ≤ 0.01). Patient education level was significantly predictive of wanting to use telehealth for at least one type of appointment (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: The findings indicate that implementing telehealth services at this Community Medicine Clinic is feasible for much of the active clientele and offers a new avenue to provide veterinary care during times of social distancing restrictions and beyond.

Background and Aim: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in humans in 2019. Although SARS-CoV-2 infection is primarily asymptomatic and transitory in companion animals, the role of these animals in the life cycle of the virus remains unclear. This study aimed to survey the first SARS-CoV-2 infection cases in pets, including a dog and three cats in São Paulo, Brazil. Materials and Methods: We invited COVID-19-positive pet owners to participate in the survey and obtained nasal, oropharyngeal, and rectal swab samples from their pets. These samples were placed in vials and subjected to a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. In addition, the owners answered an epidemiological questionnaire, and the pets underwent clinical examination and monitoring. Results: Out of 49 sampled pets, 3/19 (15.8%) cats and 1/30 (3.3%) dogs tested positive, with wide variations in viral loads. Despite the limitations of size and non-randomized sampling, our results showed that cats are more susceptible than dogs to SARS-CoV-2 infection, presenting a cat: dog ratio of 4.8: 1. Only one cat presented mild and transitory respiratory symptoms. Conclusion: Although SARS-CoV-2 infection was detected in pets in the largest South American city and the COVID-19 epicenter at the time, these first detected pet cases displayed either none or mild clinical signs.
